Description

The collection contains 987 negatives and 959 photographs showing church furnishings, carvings, sculpture and stained glass compiled by B.E. Smythies.

The subjects of the images are mainly inside English churches (and in rare instances, in churches in Wales, or outside churches such as stone crosses). They include fonts, misericords, windows, pews, pulpits, panelling, corbels, bosses, altars, crosses, tympana and coffins.

The photographs are colour and mounted mainly in 6 self adhesive albums accompanied by typescript captions and relevant cuttings and postcards. One album relates mainly to stained glass, another relates to wall paintings, two albums relate to stone carvings and two relate to wood carvings. In each album, the compiler often gathered images of similar themes within these categories together such as fonts or carvings featuring fish. The photographs were taken between 1979 and 1990.

The negatives are colour 35 mm strip negatives grouped into 33 envelopes: one envelope for each developed film. The negatives were taken between 1984 and 1990.

A handlist is available.
