Description

The collection comprises papers relating to the Society of Antiquaries Sarsen Stones in Wessex survey that was conducted between 1974 and 1977. The survey covered sarsen stones (grey-weather sandstones) in the Wessex counties of Dorset, Hampshire, and Wiltshire. This was conducted as a pilot exercise in the resolution of basic landscape problems through fresh investigation on the ground by a relatively large number of people in a restricted time. It sought to settle the following questions: how extensive was the surface sprawl of sarsen boulders and how, from Neolithic times, were sarsens dealt with either as an impediment or as a mineral resource? The survey data is kept as an archive in the library of the Society of Antiquaries.

This collection contains the papers of one of the participants of the survey, probably H.C. Bowen, Harries Collin Bowen FSA (fl.1920-2011) who worked for the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England between 1949 and 1980. The papers include an extract from 'The Antiquaries Journal' (1977, Volume 58, Part II) in which Bowen and co-writer L.F. Smith describe the survey and its outcomes.

The papers include meeting notes and minutes, correspondence annotated drafts and papers, and photographs. The file titles present are as follows: 'News Sheet No 1 Notes on meeting at Burlington House 23 February 1974', 'Circulated papers with annotations', 'Meeting held on 10 May 1975', 'Sarsen Symposium', 'John Bailey', 'Dr Goudie', 'Miss E.M. Compton', 'Richard Collins', 'Prof. B.N. Cunliffe', 'F.H. Thompson', 'Gordon Peake', 'Correspondence 1983', 'Tally Cards', 'Lists of Names', 'Information Sheet No 1 February 1974', 'Notes', 'Sarsen Project Publication 10 March 1977', 'Sarsen Archive Bucks', 'Sarsens Surrey', 'Photographs', and 'Field Survey and Investigation Input Forms'.
