Description

A collection of approximately 3,000 black and white photographic negatives taken by the Reverend Edward Victor Tanner (1886-1977) between the 1920s and the 1940s. Tanner served as an Army Chaplain during the First World War, and then took over the direction of College House in Weymouth in 1919. He was an active member of the Dorset Natural History and Archaeological Society, and was also involved with the Dorset Photographic Survey. Following the closure of Weymouth College in 1940 he became Chaplain and Housemaster at Dean Close School, Cheltenham. During the Second World War he received a permit from the National Buildings Record to take photographs of churches for the National Survey of Churches.

The collection comprises photographs of churches and cathedrals, including exteriors, interiors and details of architectural features. There are also examples of other historic sites around the country, including domestic architecture, street scenes, and landscape views. The negatives are arranged by county and filed in albums with handwritten indexes. Coverage is national, with some views of the Isles of Scilly, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, Scotland, and Wales.
