- Collection Containing Photographic Material
The collection comprises photographic negatives taken by Francis Robert Taylor, between 1905 and approximately 1948. Taylor was born in 1864, and was a draughtsman, LRIBA and London Survey Committee member. In the 1940s he was granted a licence by the National Buildings Record to photograph buildings at risk during the Second World War. He died in 1948.
The collection is divided into four series'. The first, TAY01/01, comprises 224 glass plate negatives taken by Taylor between 1903 and 1914. These images cover a wide range of places across the country, and are predominantly of vernacular buildings, including castles, public houses, shops and domestic buildings, both showing interior and exterior views. Approximately a quarter of this series shows religious buildings. Places covered include but are not limited to: Warwick, Leicester, Wells, Chester, Christchurch, Rye, Dunster, Hastings, Gloucester, Newcastle, Oxford, Salisbury, Sandwich, and Winchester. The series contains images of English Heritage sites including: Battle Abbey, Deal Castle, Apethorpe Palace, Carlisle Castle, and Kirby Hall.
The second series, TAY01/02, contains seventy-four glass plate images, presumably also by Taylor, but with no identification on the negative sleeves, either of photographer or location.
The third series, TAY01/03, contains negatives taken during the 1940s by Taylor for the National Buildings Record.
The fourth series, TAY01/04, contains a single original print showing bomb damage to St Olave's Church in the City of London.
Received Via : R E Taylor and Edward Yates, 1949 Provenance : Draughtsman, LRIBA and London Survey Committee member (1864-1948). It is possible that F R Taylor was not the photographer for this material; possibly the work of E Yates and others? Photos all date from between 1900s-1930s
