Description

The collection comprises eighteen film negatives, documenting Tudor architecture in England. The negatives were reproduced in Volume II, Part III of 'The Domestic Architecture of England During the Tudor Period', by Thomas Garner and Arthur Stratton, published by Batsford in 1911. It is not clear who took the photographs, although the publication lists Edward Garratt, Walter H Godfrey, Henry Tanner Junior and Arthur Stratton as contributing illustrations to the volumes. Sites covered in the collection are: the Gatehouse at Down Ampney Manor House, Gloucestershire; the Gatehouse at Martholme Manor House, Lancashire; Brympton House, Somerset; the Gatehouse at Kenyon Peel Hall, Greater Manchester; an oriel window at Great Chalfield, Wiltshire; chimney stacks at Hampton Court Palace, Greater London, East Barsham, Norfolk, Abbey Farmhouse, Preston Plucknett, Somerset, and Thornbury Castle, Gloucestershire; heraldic stone finials from Mapperton Manor House, Dorset; oak panelling from rooms at Waltham, Essex, and the Bishop's Palace, Norwich; and a carved stone panel formerly over the entrance gateway at New Hall, Essex.
