Description

The collection comprises seven half-plate size black and white photographs annotated 'T Colley, Carver, 103 The Chase, Clapham, London SW'.

Thomas Colley (c.1815-1898) was a Herefordshire-born stone carver. These photographs show examples of his work. All are extensively annotated with details of the work, the commissioner and the architects involved. Although there are no dates given, it is thought that the photographs were taken after 1891.

The prints show: one view of the Collingwood Building, Newcastle Upon Tyne; one view of a bank in Sunderland; and five views of 'Islet', a house in Maidenhead. The reverse of the photograph of Sunderland includes a small ink sketch of the profile of a keystone figurehead depicted in the photograph.

Archival History

The prints were acquired by the NMR before 2007.
