Description

The collection consists of 171 publication drawings, some of which are photocopies, created by William Jones Varley during the mid-20th century. The archive relates to Varley's archaeological excavations in Yorkshire, Humberside, Cheshire and Cumbria.

The collection also contains a folder with copies of letters from a series of archaeologists and institutions, dated mostly between 1974 and 1989, relating to finds and research on the excavations at Old Oswestry Hill Fort. Varley died in 1976 so despite being copies these letters may contain unpublished or lost findings.

Archival History

The collection was acquired by The Historic England Archive in 1976. Further material was acquired in 2010.
