Description

This material has not yet been fully catalogued. Copyright, date, and quantity information for this record may be incomplete or inaccurate.

The collection contains a set of unique prints taken by or attributed to pioneering British photographer Roger Fenton (1819-1869). They depict a variety of scenes in Britain (including cathedrals of Ely, Lincoln, Lichfield and Peterborough, Rievaulx and Fountains Abbeys, York Minster and Haddon Hall) and in continental Europe (including Paris, Menton, Rome, and Heidelberg). The only dated image is an 1856 view of a group outside Dunkeld cathedral in central Scotland, which is also signed by Fenton.

The prints were brought together by Valerie Lloyd (1945-1999) former curator of the Royal Photographic Society.

Also present in this collection is a set of copy negatives and copy prints of the 15 images relating to overseas subjects. The copies were produced in or after 1988.

Archival History

The prints were brought together by Valerie Lloyd and are linked with the Roger Fenton exhibition that she curated at the Hayward Gallery in 1988.
