This collection consists of eight photographic albums which were deposited with the National Monuments Record by Watney Mann and Company Limited.
The albums contain 431 photographic prints. The majority of these, comprising the first seven albums, show exterior views of Watney and Company Limited public houses in London, and date from between c1880 and c1899. They were taken by the photographers H and R Stiles for Watney and Company Limited, and provide a comprehensive overview of London public houses owned by the company at that time. In addition, many of the photographs include groups of people, either posed for the camera or shown during everyday life, and there are some good examples of street scenes during this later Victorian period.
The eight album contains photographic prints of measured drawings of the Stag Brewery in Pimlico, also owned by Watney and Company Limited.
A history of the Watney Mann company, 'The Red Barrel' by Hurford Janes, described the evolution of the company from the early days. In the 1840s James Watney became a partner in the brewery Elliot, Watney and Company. From 1858, following the retirement of John Elliot, the company was renamed James Watney and Company. In 1884, following James Watney's death, the company became Watney and Company Limited, and control passed to his sons, already partners in the business. It is possible that the photographs in this collection were taken at this time of transition in the company's history.
