Description

A collection consisting of c580 prints and 1287 negatives mostly taken by Brian M de L Young for the Historic Buildings Council between 1974 and 1981. The images, which are predominantly black and white but do contain some colour material, document high streets, shops, derelict buildings, town houses, new housing, landscapes, villages, car parks and restoration works. They primarily cover towns in the south-west, including: Okehampton, Thorverton, Colyton, Torquay, Tavistock, Stratton and Topsham in Devon; Montacute, Shepton Mallet, Frome, Portland, Farleigh Hungerford, Bruton, Somerton and Beckington in Somerset; Tisbury, Salisbury, Swindon and Chilmark in Wiltshire; Lostwithiel, Penzance, St Ives, Fowey and Falmouth in Cornwall; and Blandford, Charmouth, Christchurch and Bridport in Dorset. In addition there are images of Bristol, Bath, Liverpool and Southampton, as well as Canterbury, Rochester, Winchelsea, Berwick and Worthing.

Alongside this material there is an album containing prints documenting the re-roofing of Ranger's House in Blackheath in February 1969; prints and a location plan of the Eagle Tavern in Newport, Isle of Wight; and prints by a different photographer showing the interior of the Victorian roof at Cheltenham Ladies' College. There are also two prints dating from 1949, showing the interior and exterior of the barn at Arreton Manor on the Isle of Wight.

There are also plans, prints and correspondence relating to Brian M de L Young's architectural work.

A handlist is available.
