Description

A collection of 58 paper negatives donated by E. Taylor and attributed to the photographers George Fowler Jones, William Pumphrey and George Brown. They show sites in and around York, North Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire and are dated to the early 1850s.

Sites in York include: St Mary’s Abbey; York Minster; Lendal Tower; Barker Tower; High Petergate; Micklegate; Wilberforce School for the Blind; Fishergate Bar; Stonegate; St Leonard’s Hospital and York Minster Library.

Other sites include: Beverley Minster, Pocklington School, St John the Evangelist’s Church in Sewerby, Bridlington; Castle Howard; St Mary’s Church and the Bayle Gate in Bridlington; the gatehouse of Burton Agnes Hall; the remains of Kirkham Priory and Bishopthorpe Palace.

Additionally, a number of images are un-located but are assumed to be within North Yorkshire or the East Riding of Yorkshire. They show an unidentified hamlet in a valley, a church in the Early English style, a large detached Georgian House with a veranda and a country house with an orangery.

Some of the images attributed to George Fowler Jones and William Pumphrey are included in 'Photographs and Photographers of York: The Early Years 1844 - 1879' by Hugh Murray.

There are also 8 copy negatives and 70 prints, many of which are located in the Red Box Collection.

A handlist is available.
