Description

The photographer has noted on the back of the print: 'No 6. The church, by Wren, was burnt out and the steeple much damaged in the air raid of Dec 29 1940. The church is destined to be re-erected, without its Victorian additions and alterations, on the campus of Westminster College, Missouri, U.S.A'.

The original St Mary's Church was destroyed in the Great Fire of London in 1666 and was subsequently rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren. After its removal to the U.S.A, the footings of the former church became a public garden on Aldermanbury.
