Description

'Gateshead Borough Asylum', also known as 'Gateshead Borough Lunatic Asylum', opened in 1914. It was renamed 'Gateshead County Borough Mental Hospital' (or 'Gateshead Mental Hospital') in 1920. The hospital was also known as 'Stannington Mental Hospital'. With the start of the NHS in 1948, it became St Mary's Hospital. The hospital closed in the 1990s.
