Description

The central boss in the seventh bay from the east of the north walk of the cloisters depicts Herod's Feast, Salome's Dance - also known as the Dance of the Seven Veils - and the martyrdom of St John the Baptist, whose execution is depicted at the base of the boss. The head of St John the Baptist being carried on a dish to a table at which Herod and Herodias sit attended by two devils. Other bosses in the bay depict the birth and consecration of St Nicholas, the birth of Edward the Confessor, a vision of Edward the Confessor whilst at Mass, a figure amongst foliage, and St Nicholas saving a ship from being wrecked.
