The Wirksworth Stone is thought to date from around 800 AD; there has been a church on the site of St Mary's since at least the late 7th century. The stone was discovered in front of the altar when the floor was removed in 1820. The carved scenes have been variously interpreted, including as follows, from top left: Washing the Disciples' Feet, the Crucifixion, Burial of the Virgin, Presentation in the Temple, Descent into Hell, Ascension, Annunciation, and Mission.
