Description

The following information is recorded on the reverse of the print: "...This is 'Abel Fletcher's' mill in the famous novel 'John Halifax, gentleman'. At the top is the window out of which Abel Fletcher is made to throw the sack of corn into the river below to prevent the starving mob seizing it, during the bread riots. On the left are the old cottages in which Sally Watkins lived, where John Halifax lodged when apprenticed to Abel Fletcher. In the background is the famous tower of the Abbey... and in front of it the Bell Hotel.... which is said to be the original of Abel Fletcher's house."
