Description

The cathedral church was formerly a coventual church on or near the site of a monastery founded in c681 by Osric. The church was refounded in 1541, and includes Romanesque material dating to 1089-1100, a Decorated south aisle in the nave built 1319-1329, and a Perpendicular presbytery built between 1337 and 1367. Work continued on the cathedral until the late 19th century, with restorations completed in the 20th century. The Whispering Gallery is in the triforium above the choir, and has an arcade of four arches with wide piers and four lights. It has been designed so that a whisper can be heard across the gallery.
