Description

The cathedral was established by Bishop Regimius between c1072-1092, with various alterations made after the first remodelling between c1180 and c1200 by Richard the Mason and Geoffrey de Noiers for St Hugh of Avalon. The west front has five bays, with a large central round-headed arch rising to the full height of the wall. At the base is a double door surrounded by a round-headed arch of four ordes with Norman carvings. Above is an arcade of crocketed niches, each with a seated carved figure. On the walls either side of the entrance are niches with carved Bishops. On either side are smaller round-headed arches with a second and third door, and round-headed niches with friezes over them.
