Description

The cathedral was begun in 1083 by Simeon and completed by 1350. The aisled nave and transepts date to the 12th century building period. The nave has 12 bays with large compound arcade piers with block capitals and round-headed arches. The Octagon replaced the square Norman crossing tower which fell in 1322, and was erected by Alan of Walsingham. Four of the eight sides of the crossing have pointed headed arches with niches on decorated corbels. At the base of of the north-east side is a stone pulpit with small wrought iron stair.
