The Church Lads' Brigade was founded in 1891 by Walter Gee, Secretary of the Junior Branch of the Church of England Termperance Society. It was established as a means to address the poor spiritual and physical development of young people through religious education and military training. It was popular with religious leaders because kept young people within the influence of the church after they left school; the Government saw it as a useful source of military cadets and the young people enjoyed the social and recreational aspects of the club.
