Description

The lower courtyard houses most of the private apartments, offices and lodgings on the west front, the chapel and Earl's bedroom on the south front, and the Great Hall, which borders both courtyards. The focus is on the south corner, which houses the chapel, and a three-step patio in front of it. The house has foundations which date to the 12th century, but most of the south-west courtyard dates to the late 14th and 15th centuries. Later work was carried out in the 16th and 17th centuries.
