This is a photograph of an image printed in a newspaper. It is believed that the image was photographed by PEW Street c1929-1950.
The photographer's notes state: 'Copy. "V.-Ram Alley". Also known as Scriver's Alley. Looking down the alley to the High Street, (north side). The cottage (modern) by which the woman is standing is No 122 on the further and south side of the High Street, and on the west side of a small alley. The high brick building on the left is No 45 High St, old numbering. Demolished Dec. 1928 & Jan 1929. The low cottages on left demolished in 1930. The high building on right is No 43 High St (old numbering). Demolished Dec 1928 & Jan 1929.
"The name of Ram Alley was attributed in some way with predatory enterprises alleged to have been practised in the 'good old days' when blocks of sheep (including rams) were being shepherded to the London markets" (From an illustration after a drawing by Llwyd Roberts in the Sidcup & Kentish Times, Sept. 20. 1929)'.
The entrance to Ram Alley was located close to the site of what is now 145-159 Eltham High Street.
