Description

During the 19th century shipbuilding took place on the Thames, and so did shipbreaking. Henry Castle & Son, Shipbreaker, had a yard just north of Vauxhall Bridge. Wood, metal and fittings were recycled. The ships figureheads visible from left to right are: HMS Edinburgh (1811); HMS Princess Royal (1853); and HMS Orion (1854). The Castle & Son waggon outside the gates advertises 'ship timber logs'.
