The photographer’s notes state: ‘ (13) A group of old buildings, including the former Hamilton Rooms, at the back of "Playfair" (No. 38 Park Street N.E. side), Bristol, as seen across Park Street from the S.W. side. "Playfair" is on the site of No. 38. No. 40 was on the left, and No. 38 on the right. (A full description is given elsewhere of the group of buildings.)'
A separate note by the photographer states: 'Description of the view taken across Park Street on Aug. 19. 1952. 40 on left, Playfair shop 38 and 36 on right.
At the back of the group of buildings, which are behind the sites of 40 and 38 is the Hamilton Rooms building. It is in five successive and gabled and pantiled ridges. The nearest one is seen going across behind the low chimney shaft that appears above the right end of the Playfair shop front. Just to the left of the ridge is the top part of a building, that is on the left side of a small courtyard. It has two top windows showing, the nearer one being elliptically arched. The entrance to this courtyard is at the end of a passage along the other side of the wall on the end of which you see the number 40, just to the left of the shop. You go along the passage to a doorway and so through the building, which has the low chimney showing above the Playfair shop, into the above courtyard.
The high chimney shaft, rough-cast, and the ruined and open gabled roof just below it are parts of 2 Hamilton Place, which was behind No. 38 Park Street.
The top of Hamilton House with dormers and a high wide brick chimney shaft are just to the right of the above high rough cast chimney. Red Lodge can be seen in the distance, just to the right of Hamilton House.'
