Devonshire House was built in the 1730s for William Cavendish, 3rd Duke of Devonshire. The house was sold by the 9th Duke in 1918 and demolished to make way for flats (also known as Devonshire House). The Mayfair Hotel and Mayfair Theatre now stand in the former grounds. The Bedford Lemere daybook records the publishers Cassell and Company as clients and also references the Duke or Devonshire.
