Charles Cammell & Company purchased the Penistone plant during the 1860s to supplement existing rail production at its Cyclops Works in Sheffield. The firm merged with Laird, Son & Company in 1903 to form Cammell Laird and Company who commissioned this photograph.
A note in the Bedford Lemere daybook records that all 23 negatives from the Cammell Laird Sheffield series were sent to the Sheffield offices January 11th 1916.
