Burwood was a Norman manor from 1066 onwards, with the land being purchased by King Henry VIII in 1540 to create a hunting park. The land was then sold and passed through the Frederick and Guiness families, with the parkland gradually divided, sold and developed into a housing estate from the 1920s into the 1960s.
This photograph was commissioned by Daniel Smith, Oakley and Garrard, land agents and auctioneers of London, who were likely to have been handling the sale of the land. These images are likely to have been taken for inclusion in sales particular documents.
