The photograph was taken for the Cunard Steamship Company Limited. The vessel was built as the SS Imperator, but was seized by the US Navy in 1919 as a troop transport vessel after the First World War. She was passed to British ownership and sold to Cunard in 1921, at which time she was renamed the RMS Berengaria.
