The vessel was built as the SS Imperator, but was seized by the US Navy in 1919 as a troop transport vessel after the First World War. She was passed to British ownership and sold to Cunard in 1921, at which time she was renamed the RMS Berengaria. At the time the photograph was taken the ship was owned by Cunard-White Star who had merged in 1934.
