Description

Supermarine was an aircraft manufacturer established in 1913 as Pemberton-Billing Limited. In 1928 Supermarine was sold to the engineering conglomerate Vickers Limited, after which the Southampton works became known as Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers) Ltd. The company built a range of seaplanes and flying boats but is best remembered for producing Spitfire fighter planes during the Second World War. The erecting shop seen here was part of a building programme undertaken on the Woolston site in the mid 1930s.
