Description

The theatre was built on a plot of land bought by Charles Edward Flower, and designed by William Frederick Unsworth and Edward John Dodgshun. It was built 1877-1879, although was largely destroyed by a fire in 1926. Architect Elisabeth Scott won a competition to design a new theatre after the fire, which was built 1928-1932, although it underwent changes between 1936 and 1978. Scott also converted the remains of the previous theatre into a conference centre in 1933. The facades facing the River Avon and Bancroft remain of Scott's designs.
