Description

The Gorilla House was the first significant commission for Lubetkin and Tecton. It was built in 1932-1933. The circular building was divided into an open cage and a closed cage. A screen could be drawn around the open cage in winter, creating a sheltered viewing area for the public. Retractable glass windows were installed in the dividing wall to create a warm habitat for the gorillas. In the summer, the gorillas could access both the open and closed cages while the public viewed them from outside the cage.
