A site on Manchester Road was acquired for a new building for the Municipal Technical College at some point after 1925. An architectural competition was held in around 1935/36 for building's design. Construction began in 1937 and the new building was completed in 1941.
The same design is also shown in CC47/02750, CC47/02751, and CC47/02753-CC47/02756. Neither the architect and whether this design won a place in the competition are known.
