A site on Manchester Road was acquired for a new building for the Municipal Technical College at some point after 1925. An architectural competition was held in around 1935/36 for building's design. Construction began in 1937 and the new building was completed in 1941.
The same design is also shown in CC47/02757, CC47/02758, CC47/02760 and CC47/02761. Neither the architect and whether this design won a place in the competition are known.
