The scene-painting gallery floor at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham. Located high in the theatre, the large hand-painted 'flats', the backdrop scenes for the theatre stage, were raised and lowered with ropes to enable the scene painter to work on them.

Description

At other theatre sites, the scene-painter would work on a moveable wooden floor or balcony, which would itself be raised and lowered with ropes as needed to allow him to work on the large scene paintings.
