Description

A castle has occupied this site since the 12th century. The original castle was in ruins when Sir Charles Cavendish bought Bolsover in circa 1590. Together with the famous architect Robert Smythson, Sir Charles set about replacing the original structure with a new country house, intended for comfortable living rather than for defence. After his death in 1617, the new Bolsover Castle was completed by Cavendish's two sons William and John. Bolsover Castle is now in the guardianship of English Heritage.
