Inscription below tablet reads 'Remember them that are in bonds'.

Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846) was pivotal to the British campaign to end the transatlantic slave trade and the institution of slavery. This memorial was erected to commemorate his life and work. It was unveiled on the 11th November 1881.
