The 'Liverpool School for the Indigent Blind' was established in 1791. It later became the 'Royal School for the Blind'. The school moved to the site on the corner of Hope Street and Hardman Street in 1851. New school buildings were opened in Wavertree in 1898 for younger pupils, though the Hardman Street site was retained as a technical training school. The school transferred completely to the Wavertree site in 1958. The Hardman Street building became Liverpool City Police Headquarters, then the Merseyside Trade Union Centre from 1982 until 2004.
