The gun was named in honour of Roger Gilbert who led the operation to recover it in 1970 from the floor of the moat. The 9-inch rifled muzzle loading gun, weighing 12 tons, dates from the 1870s when the three emplacements facing the harbour approach, known as Cook Street, Box Street and King Street, were modified to take these more powerful armaments. Two others still buried in the moat, have been identified by geophysical survey.
