Description

Built as War Seal Mansions between 1917 and 1923 to provide 138 apartments for seriously wounded ex-servicemen and their families. Building work was funded by theatre entrepreneur and philanthropist Oswald Stoll through his War Seal Foundation. A ‘war seal’ was a diamond-shaped stamp used to seal the backs of letters and Stoll sold 5 million, at a half-penny each. Stoll received a knighthood in 1919 and in 1937 the War Seal Foundation was renamed in his honour.
