Description

The war memorial stands at the south end of the platform concourse. Originally erected in 1920 on Platform 1 as a large wall tablet with pediment and double pilasters framing the 11 name panels, in 1973 the name panels were removed from the frame and displayed in the First Class Lounge. The panels were in storage from 2007 during the redevelopment of the station and reinstated in their present form in October 2013. The panels are set in individual steel frames and spaced to reflect the line of soldiers depicted in John Singer Sargent's painting 'Gassed'. The memorial was dedicated to the employees of The Great Northern Railway and contains 937 names.
