Photographer's note: 'Silver 'Goodwood Cup', by Paul Storr, 1835. It is silver, the lid with cast figures of an Arab with a pipe leaning against a horse, inscribed: "Won by Mr Theobald's Rockingham, July 30th 1835". John Theobald is depicted in a portrait at Brodsworth, and Rockingham was one of his most successful racehorses, winning the St. Leger in 1833 for another owner, Mr Watt, and the Goodwood Cup in 1835. Theobald commissioned a portrait of himself with Rockingham from the artist James Ward in 1835, no doubt to celebrate this victory. Base 285mm w x 275mm d x 85mm h. Overall 710mm h x 495mm dia. 90009296.1'
