Photographer's note: 'Victorian twin handled silver trophy cup made in London, 1860, by R & S Garrard. Heavily decorated it has a cast finial in the form of a cherub on a dolphin, cast handles with dolphin terminals and cast swags, masks and a low relief panel, around there are chased scrolls. It sits on a small ebonised stand inscribed "The Gift of Her Majesty the Queen to the Royal Yacht Squadron Cowes Regatta 1860". The 'Cowes Regatta Trophy' is silver, on an ebonised wood stand, by Robert Garrard, 1860. The cup was made by Garrard, one of the most successful firms of silversmiths in the 19th century, who became the Crown Jewellers in 1843. They made many racing cups and trophies. This trophy was won by Charles Sabine Thellusson with his innovative yacht Aline on her maiden race in 1860. This was the most prestigious trophy raced for at the time, and Thellussons victory established his position as a leading yachtsman, the Aline as a model for racing yachts, and her young designer Benjamin Nicholson, as the leading designer at Campers (later to become Camper & Nicholson), the biggest 19th century yacht-builders, and still one of the leading firms in the field.) 48 cm tall. 90019638'.
