Description

Photographer's note: 'William IV silver soup tureen yachting trophy, cover and stand, London 1831. Made by Barnards and of melon fluted globular form with relief foliage. The central silver soup tureen, with its lid and stand, is a yachting trophy won by Charles Sabine Thellusson. The soup tureen was made in 1831, and bears the hallmarks of that year and the makers, Barnards of London. The later use of such a piece as a trophy was quite common. The wooden box for the trophy is now amongst those displayed in the Lathe Room. The inscription reads: ‘Royal Victoria Yacht Club Ocean Match Trophy, Torquay, round Eddystone to Plymouth, August 23rd 1864 won by the Commodore in his yacht Aline’. Charles Sabine Thellusson was one of the most significant Victorian yachtsmen, commissioning some of the most innovative, fastest and largest sailing yachts of the period. The Aline was his most important yacht. 90019637. Wooden case for trophy.'
