Bamforth and Co Ltd, started in 1870 by James Bamforth in Holmfirth, was originally focused on creating magic lantern slides. The company moved onto silent films in partnership with the Riley Brothers of Bradford. Bamforth and Co later moved onto postcard production. The second floor windows of their premises on Station Road would have given a soft, diffused light throughout much of the year, providing good conditions for portrait photography.
