Walters Way was the second phase in the first group self-building project to use Walter Segal's pioneering method of construction, built in the 1980s. The site had been derelict for many years before it was purchased by Lewisham council and the opportunity to self-build houses was offered to tenants or those waiting for social housing. The Walters Way development allowed individuals choice over the interior layout and optional extensions. The structures use small pad foundations at the foot of each post, which allow mature trees - of which there were several already on the site - to grow close to buildings.
