Description

There were two other 'disappearing guns' installed at Pendennis Castle in the late nineteenth century, placed in the remodelled Half Moon Battery at the southern end of the castle's outer defences. When fired, the gun's barrel would recoil on pivoting steel arms, ‘disappearing’ into the gun pit through a steel shield under which the gunners reloaded the gun in safety.

Reconstruction illustration IC077/001 also shows the same gun at Pendennis Castle, and also shows the gun's surroundings.
