Description

Sir Thomas Cornwallis was the last castellan of Portchester Castle and made significant improvements to the east ranges of the castle complex in the early seventeenth century, in order to transform the site into a more comfortable residence.

This illustration was reproduced on page 49 of the 1990 English Heritage guidebook for Portchester Castle, and again on page 33 of the 2003 guidebook for the site. This drawing appears to be an update of drawing IC081/015, showing the castle as it may have appeared in 1399. The original drawing was amended in 2004, when the original artist added watercolour to the drawing (see IC081/032). This drawing is one of seven phased reconstructions of the castle, shown from the same viewpoint throughout its development. The illustration (or a reproduction of it) is thought to have been displayed in display case 9 at the site.
