A set of thirty reconstruction drawings and four general illustrations depicting medieval Portchester Castle and the Roman and Saxon forts which occupied the site before it. The illustrations were created between 1959 and 2004 by a number of different illustrators, and were created largely for reproduction in guidebooks published for the site, or for display at the site itself.
The earliest illustration in the set is a reconstruction of medieval Portchester Castle, created by Alan Sorrell in 1959 and reproduced in site guidebooks published by the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England.
The set includes twelve reconstructions and general illustrations by Terry Ball, created in 1983 and 2004, and depicting the site of Portchester Castle throughout its development. This includes a subset of seven phased reconstruction illustrations of the Inner Bailey of the medieval castle throughout successive building phases, created in 1983. Four of these original illustrations were subsequently colourised with watercolour by the same artist in 2004, with some of them being reproduced in the 2008 English Heritage guidebook for the site.
There are ten reconstruction illustrations created in 1990 by Peter Dunn, depicting views and individual areas of Portchester Castle and its predecessor Roman and Saxon forts at various points through the site's development. These illustrations appear to have been commissioned to be reproduced in the 1996 English Heritage guidebook for the site, with some subsequently reproduced in later reprint editions.
There are two further illustrations by Liam Wales which were created in 2004 and were included in the 2008 guidebook. There is also a concept illustration, created by combining a reconstruction of the nineteenth century Castle Theatre and a sketch for a viewing platform, both created by Stephen Conlin in 2006. There are also twenty-one black and white and one colour preliminary sketches and some additional backup material, created by Peter Dunn. These have not been catalogued at item level.
Alongside this there are one black and white and one colour preliminary sketches by Terry Ball. These have also not been catalogued at item level.
