Description

After a period of peace and prosperity, Roman troops returned to Richborough by AD250 in response to attacks along the south and east coasts of England by marauding Saxons, Angles and Jutes. The first century triumphal arch had fallen into disrepair by this point, and the buildings in the centre of the town had been demolished to make room for the barracks. The triple ditch and earth fortifications surrounding the barracks were subsequently replaced with the defensive walls of the later Roman Fort.
